Tucson Theft Arrests

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

For approximately seven years, Jose Galvan served as pastor to Iglesia De Dios Sinal.  Due to recent alleged improprieties which occurred during his tenure as pastor, Jose Galvan was suspended from his position by the governing board of the Church of God denomination. Rather than consider restoration within the church, Jose Galvan announced that he was severing all ties with the Church of God denomination.  Mr. Galvan was made fully aware that all monies and property of the local church were the legal property of the Church of God.

The International General Assembly governs the operation, including ownership of all real and personal property of the Church of God, Cleveland, Tennessee, U.S.A., at all structure levels – international, national, state, territorial, district, and local.  A pastor is no more than an employee that has no authority to take real estate or personal property, including money and bank accounts, from his employer, who in this case is the Church of God, Cleveland, Tennessee.  All property is held in trust for the Church of God denomination.

Jose Galvan, assisted by his wife, Marie Galvan, and the church’s treasurer, Cristella Iguado, removed over $60,000.00 in property from the local church.  The property included musical instruments, sound equipment, office equipment, chairs, an altar, and other religious articles; church vehicles were also taken.  These suspects also removed over $100,000.00 in funds from the church’s bank account.  Within twenty-four hours, Pima County detectives located where the stolen property was being stored, served search warrants, and recovered the property and vehicles.  All the property has been returned to the victim church.  Detectives also served a seizure warrant, freezing the illicitly obtained funds, once they were located.  However, the suspects had already withdrew $50,000.00 from the account in the form of three (3) cashier’s checks.  Detectives then served a follow-up search warrant on the residence of Jose and Maria Galvan.  The three (3) cashier’s checks were recovered and returned to the church.

Charges on the three (3) involved subjects are as follows:

Jose Galvan (DOB 03/04/70)
2 counts Theft (over $25,000)
Unlawful Use of Means of Transportation
Fraudulent Schemes and Artifices

Maria Galvan (DOB 05/02/54)
2 counts Theft (over $25,000)

Cristella Iguado (DOB 07/09/79)
Theft (over $25,000)

Mug shots of all three (3) will be made available at the Pima County Sheriff’s Administration Building located at 1750 E. Benson Hwy.
